A Well-kept Secret for Diabetics

entrance

I have been classified as a type 2 diabetic. I’m one of the people that are fortunate enough to be able to manage it with diet and exercise. But, I still have to head off every so often and get those blood tests done to make sure that diabetes of mine is under control.

When I was first diagnosed with diabetes I have to admit I got a bit of a shock. But it was a shock that I needed and was certainly a blessing in disguise. I knew that because of this I had to clean up my act and make some important life changes. So, off I went on my mission to lose weight and of course to keep a close eye on what I was eating. One thing I can say is that because of this, I’m at my healthiest I’ve ever been, and I feel fairly proud of myself.

One of the ways to manage diabetes is to make sure that I keep track of my blood glucose levels, which is done through blood tests. I need to do this at a pathology lab about every three months. I have to say, it’s not one of those things that I sprint to get to; it’s certainly not my favourite thing! But the only reason for this is that I can’t stand the queues at the Medical Centre at the Macquarie Shopping Centre. That’s what sends me running. I think I could be allergic to queues. If you’ve been there, you’ll probably know exactly what I’m talking about!

But there is hope! Hope in the form of a lab that is not only quiet but there are no queues! I say hooray! It’s a bit of a well-kept secret, but I’ll share it with you…it’s the Macquarie University Hospital Laboratory. The reason why it’s a bit of a secret is that none of the locals really know that it exists.

I think all of us have been under the impression that the centre is just for university staff and students, but I’m happy to tell you it’s not. It’s for all of us, for you and me!
Now this is the part that I find quite amusing! I get treated a bit like royalty…there’s nothing wrong with that now and again is there? The difference here is that they’ve actually got time to talk to you as a human being as opposed to being just a number. They don’t have to churn those people in and out at the rate of knots.  You won’t believe it, but there are even real, yes real, plants, comfortable chairs and it’s super clean. And just to make it even more appealing there’s plenty on street parking if you don’t want to pay a dollar or so for the hospital parking station.
Well, next time if you need to get a blood test go and try Macquarie University Hospital Laboratory. I highly recommend it.
